PLS launch 2025 Community Gants Program

28 May 2025

PLS’ annual Community Grants Program opened for applications today inviting community organisations in Port Hedland and surrounding communities to apply for funding of up to $10,000.

The program is part of the PLS’ commitment to shaping tomorrow by supporting grassroots community initiatives that align with the Company’s three key focus areas of education, community resilience, and energy transition.

The annual program provides a one-off payment of up to $10,000 to successful initiatives in the priority communities of Port Hedland, Strelley, Yandeyarra, and Pilbara-wide initiatives.

PLS’ Chief Sustainability Officer, Sandra McInnes, emphasised the importance of community-driven initiatives in creating lasting positive impact.

“Our commitment to shaping tomorrow extends far beyond our role in the clean energy transition – it encompasses our responsibility to the communities where we operate and the people who call the Pilbara home,” Ms McInnes said.

“Through the Community Grants Program, we’re empowering local organisations to drive the initiatives that matter most to their communities, whether that’s enhancing educational opportunities, building community resilience, or supporting the energy transition.

“With more than 30 years of mine life ahead of us, we’re committed to being a long term partner in the prosperity and wellbeing of the Pilbara.”

The Community Grants Program has already made a significant impact since its launch in 2023, supporting 23 local community projects including a Remote Art School Project, an initiative between Spinifex Hill Studio and Strelley Community School.

This initiative aims to engage and inspire students from the remote Strelley Community School, located 60 kilometres east of Port Hedland, with a series of visual art classes that focus on play, experimentation and preservation of culture.

Spinifex Hill Studio Gallery Coordinator Clare Wohlnick said the program provided a creative setting to build and strengthen relationships between the students and practising artists.

“The town children were able to form deeper connections with their community-based peers and family members in a cross-generational setting,” Ms Wohlnick said.

“A large canvas mural was created with paintings from the children and is ready to take back to Strelley community where they will be able to display it.”

The Community Grants Program forms part of PLS’ broader Community Investment Framework, which ensures the company supports programs that align with community need and delivers positive, lasting and sustainable impact across its priority communities.
